Hazardous Premises?

There are a number of establishments considered as hazardous premises and your Insurers will normally exclude cover for work at these unless you have previously

Insurer’s will request details about the job you are undertaking, the equipment you will be using, the height you are working to and the length of the contract. They will also wish to establish whether those working on site have the correct training to carry out the job proposed.

Below is part of a typical insurance policy under the hazardous work exclusion:

Work is excluded on or in the following premises:-

Power stations or Nuclear installations/establishments, oil, gas or chemical refineries, bulk storage production premises, mainframe computers or rooms containing mainframe computers, aircraft, aerospace systems or hovercraft, watercraft other than work, not involving the use of heat on or in watercraft in docks, harbors, boatyards or inland waterways or railways, airports, unless work is within the terminal building/departure lounge/public area. Airside in the open is excluded, underground or underwater.

Now let’s say you regularly work at airports fitting signs inside the terminal building and also in the car park area, sign writing and applying graphics to the hire car vehicles.

You have now contacted your Insurers and they have agreed to extend your policy to cover work at these premises but there could be another potential problem as you are using Hot air guns for removing the old graphics and applying new ones.

Does your current policy cover you for using heat away from your own premises? Are hot air guns excluded or included for cover when you are working away?

Under most Commercial Combined policies there will be heat exclusion when working away from your Business premises. Check your policy to determine the extent of the Exclusion or contact your Broker for clarification.

SignElite removes the exclusion for Hot air guns and Hot air strippers however many Commercial Combined policies may not be directed specifically to the Signs Industry and Insurers will not be aware of the need for this cover to be left in.

The above is for information and guidance only and should not be relied on for individual circumstances and professional advice must always be sought specific to your individual circumstances and requirements.
